How to Monitor SSL Certificate Expiration Dates

SSL/TLS certificate expiration can occur unexpectedly, resulting in intimidating security warnings for your visitors. Tracking expiration dates automatically prevents brand damage and downtime.

Step 1: Register an HTTPS Check

The most reliable way to monitor SSL certificates is to set up automated socket queries. When configuring a website monitor in Monitor Hub, input the target hostname using the HTTPS protocol. The check runner will automatically query the certificate validity as part of every availability check.

Step 2: Configure Warning Thresholds

Do not wait for the final day to renew certificates. Setup threshold warning alerts at:

• 30 Days: Ideal for early scheduling and coordinating auto-renewal tasks.
• 14 Days: Send secondary warnings to verify if Let's Encrypt scripts have executed.
• 7 Days: Critical alert status. Page engineers if manual interventions are needed.

Step 3: Hook Notifications to Incident Feeds

Ensure warning alerts are pushed directly to communication channels like Slack, Telegram, or email. In Monitor Hub, configure these channels in the Alert Settings tab to route certificate statuses automatically.
